The life of April Allen

1. Was teaching your original plan for your life, what was your original dream in high school?
My original plan was to be a pediatrician but I don’t like math or to see children mistreated so the next best thing was to be a Kindergarten teacher. After my advisor died in college and my first minor (Psychology) advisor was a little strange I took up my second minor which was History.(I’m a lover of history). I never thought that I would ever be teaching high school. I wanted to work at the Smithsonian and one day on my own museum.
2. Looking back would had rather stayed in Kansas City, MO?
I really did enjoy my time in Kansas City and I love to go visit but no….it snows too much there.
3. What was your best year at Northwest?
I love all of my classes but my best year would have to be 2008. School Year 2007-2008 was extraordinary. I had an outstanding group of seniors and we were like a big family. We had our ups and downs but I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world. I still keep in touch with most of them now.
4. What’s the biggest benefit of your job?
Helping someone reach their goal in life. I love all of my students and I have such high hopes for them. I love to see graduation come and see those students that was said they wouldn’t make it or they would drop out walk across that stage. A prime example: Last year the day of graduation, I received a card from one of my students that said, “Creek. No Paddle L…. But you didn’t let me drown.” He wrote the sweetest message on the inside about how I didn’t give up on him and that I believed in him when he didn’t believe in himself. That’s what makes all the hell I go through within a school year worth it.
5. Are you very religious?
I am. I’m not where I probably should be but I do know where my help comes from. I am a praise dance adviser and I do things in church. Don’t attend like I should but will catch Joel Osteen on Sunday morning.
6. Would you let your children attend Northwest?
To be totally honest, probably not if I’m not there, but by the time Jazyme get to high school it will most like be all online. But it is a possibility.
7. You stated that one of your goals was to have a history museum, have you looked deeper into that?
I have inquired about that and had actually did an application for a job at the Smithsonian last summer to get a taste of what it would be like to be a curator, but my calling is in Education in the school system. Maybe once I retired I can become a tour guide.
8. Why did you come back here to this area?
I didn’t have plans to come back to this area but I guess God had other plans. I had a job interview in 2004 at Warren County HS but when I called to find out what time to come in, they knew nothing about it. So I’ve been here ever since. Dr. Gilchrist gave me a job in the county and I’ve been at NW since Jan. 2005 and wouldn’t trade it.
9. What’s something you live by?
My word and name is all I have and I’m a woman of my word. (My Granny taught me that) I learned this working at Northwest….Get it straight from the horse’s mouth because the a**will give you a whole lot of sh*t.
10. What’s in the future for April Allen?
Live at Disney World every day! LOL! Seriously, I take life one day at a time. I have two beautiful children that I want to do right by and make them proud to call me Mommy. I want to finish my masters and think about getting a doctrine. Go to a Dallas Cowboys game in Dallas, hopefully, this season.I do want to travel outside of the country. Maybe go to Italy before my nephew comes back to the states. Maybe hit the mega million lottery and make good on something on the Class of 2013’s Bucket List. (I got to play the lottery first. :-p )
